Summary

Aberrant BCL10 expression occurs in various ocular adnexal lymphomas, not just MALT lymphoma. This expression does not appear to impact clinical outcomes in patients with ocular adnexal lymphoma.

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Ophthalmology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Ocular adnexal lymphomas (OALs) are a group of lymphoid malignancies affecting the tissues around the eye.
  • BCL10 is a protein involved in cellular signaling pathways, and its aberrant expression has been implicated in various lymphomas.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the expression of BCL10 in a cohort of ocular adnexal lymphomas in the United States.
  • To determine if aberrant BCL10 expression is associated with specific subtypes of OAL or clinical outcomes.

Main Methods:

  • A retrospective study was conducted on 48 patients with OAL.
  • Immunohistochemistry was used to detect BCL10 expression in tissue microarray blocks.
  • Clinical data, including recurrence rates and time to recurrence, were analyzed.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Aberrant BCL10 expression was observed in 30.3% of mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphomas and 40% of follicular lymphomas.
  • No significant differences in clinical parameters, recurrence rates, or time to recurrence were found between patients with and without aberrant BCL10 expression.
  • BCL10 expression was also noted in mantle cell lymphoma.

Conclusions:

  • Aberrant BCL10 expression is present in various OAL subtypes beyond MALT lymphoma.
  • The frequency of aberrant BCL10 expression in ocular adnexal MALT lymphoma may be lower than in other MALT lymphomas.
  • Aberrant BCL10 nuclear expression in OAL does not appear to correlate with clinical outcomes, warranting further investigation with larger cohorts.
