Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Vascular Surgery
  • Radiology

Background:

  • Retroperitoneal leiomyosarcoma is a rare malignancy.
  • Vascular involvement is a known complication.

Observation:

  • A case of retroperitoneal leiomyosarcoma with extensive intravascular and extra-vascular tumor thrombus.
  • The patient presented with abdominal aortic rupture due to tumor invasion.

Findings:

  • Tumor invasion of the abdominal aorta led to rupture.
  • Extensive tumor thrombus was present in the inferior vena cava.
  • Rupture of the abdominal aorta requires prompt diagnosis and repair.

Implications:

  • Early recognition of aortic rupture is critical to prevent fatal outcomes.
  • While inferior vena cava leiomyosarcoma can be resected, long-term survival remains poor.
