Summary

A rare case of benign retroperitoneal schwannoma was found in a 76-year-old man. Surgical removal of the larger tumor led to a good outcome, with the smaller tumor remaining stable.

Background:

  • Retroperitoneal schwannomas are rare tumors arising from nerve sheath cells.
  • Benign variants are uncommon, and presentation in elderly patients is infrequent.

Observation:

  • A 76-year-old male presented with two cystic retroperitoneal masses, measuring 12 cm and 7 cm.
  • Imaging revealed the larger mass anterior to the psoas muscle and the smaller mass within it.

Findings:

  • The larger retroperitoneal schwannoma was successfully excised via laparotomy.
  • Post-operative follow-up of 3.5 years showed no change in the intramuscular tumor, with the patient remaining asymptomatic.

Implications:

  • This case highlights the possibility of benign retroperitoneal schwannomas in elderly individuals.
