Area of Science:

  • Veterinary Medicine
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Parasitology

Background:

  • Canine leishmaniasis (CanL) is a significant vector-borne parasitic disease.
  • Autochthonous foci of CanL were not previously reported in northwestern Italy.
  • Sand flies are vectors for Leishmania parasites.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the prevalence of canine leishmaniasis in northwestern Italy.
  • To assess the presence of sand flies in the region.
  • To investigate the potential for endemic CanL in continental climate areas.

Main Methods:

  • Conducted a survey to assess canine leishmaniasis prevalence.
  • Investigated the presence and distribution of sand flies.
  • Analyzed epidemiological data from northwestern Italy.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Identified active foci of canine leishmaniasis in northwestern Italy.
  • Confirmed the presence of sand flies in the surveyed areas.
  • The findings indicate CanL is endemic in continental climate zones.

Conclusions:

  • Canine leishmaniasis is established in northwestern Italy.
  • The disease has expanded into continental climate areas.
  • This highlights the need for increased surveillance and control measures.
