Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Neurology
  • Immunology

Background:

  • Parry-Romberg syndrome (PRS) is a rare disorder characterized by progressive hemifacial atrophy.
  • The etiology of PRS is often unclear, with theories including autoimmune processes and trauma.

Observation:

  • An unusual case of PRS involving enophthalmos and right-sided hemiatrophy is presented.
  • Imaging revealed craniofacial abnormalities. Post-surgical enophthalmos correction resulted in persistent eyelid swelling and transient choroid vasculitis.

Findings:

  • Echography and fluorescein angiography highlighted transient choroid vasculitis.
  • Fundus examination revealed retinal choroid folds.
  • Weakly positive immunological tests suggested an autoimmune basis.

Related Experiment Videos

Implications:

  • The combination of enophthalmos, hemiatrophy, and vasculitis supports an autoimmune etiology for PRS.
  • This case underscores the importance of considering autoimmune factors in PRS diagnosis.
  • Further research into the autoimmune links in PRS is warranted.
