  • Solid-State Chemistry

Background:

  • The structural diversity of polyoxometalates is a key area of research.
  • Understanding the coordination chemistry of chromium oxides is essential for materials science.
  • Previous studies have characterized various alkali metal salts and related chromium oxides.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To elucidate the crystal structure of dipotassium tetrachromium(VI) tridecaoxide (K2Cr4O13).
  • To analyze the coordination environment and structural motifs of the tetrachromate anion.
  • To compare the observed anion conformation with those found in other chromium-oxygen compounds.

Main Methods:

  • Single-crystal X-ray diffraction data collection at low temperature (173 K).

Related Experiment Videos

  • Structure determination and refinement using crystallographic software.
  • Analysis of the crystal packing and coordination geometry.
  • Main Results:

    • The crystal structure of K2Cr4O13 was solved in the monoclinic Pc space group.
    • The structure features discrete [Cr4O13]2- zigzag chains.
    • These chains are interconnected by charge-balancing potassium (K+) cations.
    • The tetrachromate anion exhibits a specific conformation distinct from those in related compounds.

    Conclusions:

    • The structural characterization of K2Cr4O13 provides new insights into chromium oxide chemistry.
    • The observed zigzag chain motif represents a novel structural category for tetrachromate anions.
    • Further investigation into the conformational variations of tetrachromate anions is warranted.
