Summary

Background:

Total ankle replacement (TAR) can fail due to loosening or infection.
Ankle arthrodesis is a salvage procedure for failed TAR, aiming to restore function and alleviate pain.

Observation:

This study reports on four patients undergoing ankle arthrodesis following failed TAR.
Indications included loosened or infected TAR components.
Contraindications noted were poor general health and absent patient compliance.

Findings:

Successful pain-free gait restoration was achieved in two out of four patients without complications.
One patient experienced an absence of bony bridging, requiring revision surgery.
Revision with cancellous bone grafts and intramedullary fixation led to a successful outcome in the revision case.
