Summary

Morbid obesity can cause pseudotumor cerebri (PTC). Bariatric surgery led to significant weight loss and resolved PTC in a patient, demonstrating its effectiveness for this condition.

Background:

  • Pseudotumor cerebri (PTC), or benign intracranial hypertension, is often linked to morbid obesity.
  • Obesity reduction is a known management strategy for PTC.

Observation:

  • A 42-year-old female with morbid obesity and secondary PTC underwent a modified jejunocolonostomy.
  • The patient experienced substantial weight loss post-surgery.

Findings:

  • The patient lost 43% of excess body weight.
  • Intracranial pressure normalized following weight loss.

Implications:

  • Bariatric surgery is a viable and effective treatment for PTC associated with morbid obesity.
  • This case highlights the importance of weight management in resolving benign intracranial hypertension.
