Summary

Bilateral lower limb gangrene in neonates can occur without a clear cause. While treatment can prevent death, it may not fully resolve limb damage, though recovery is typically uneventful.

Area of Science:

  • Neonatal Medicine
  • Pediatric Surgery
  • Vascular Surgery

Background:

  • Neonatal gangrene, particularly affecting the lower limbs, presents a significant clinical challenge.
  • Identifying the etiology of neonatal gangrene is crucial for appropriate management and prognosis.

Observation:

  • Four neonates presented with bilateral lower limb gangrene requiring specialized care.
  • Etiological investigation revealed no identifiable cause in two of the four cases.

Findings:

  • All neonates received prompt and appropriate therapeutic interventions.
  • Mortality was successfully averted in all cases through timely management.
  • Despite treatment, some degree of morbidity persisted in the affected neonates.

Implications:

  • This case series highlights the importance of aggressive management for neonatal limb gangrene.
  • The potential for long-term morbidity necessitates ongoing surveillance and supportive care.
  • Further research into the underlying causes of idiopathic neonatal gangrene is warranted.
