Summary

Subgingival temperature, measured with a periodontal temperature probe, was found to be lower than sublingual temperature in subjects with periodontal disease. Higher subgingival temperatures correlated with increased signs of gum inflammation and deeper periodontal pockets.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between subgingival temperature and various clinical parameters of periodontal disease.
  • To compare subgingival temperatures with core body temperature (sublingual temperature).

Main Methods:

  • 44 subjects (aged 14-71) were assessed for gingival redness, plaque, suppuration, bleeding on probing, pocket depth, and attachment level at 6 sites per tooth.
  • Subgingival temperatures were measured at the same sites using a periodontal temperature probe (Periotemp).

    • Further research could explore the diagnostic and prognostic value of subgingival thermometry in periodontology.
