Area of Science:
- Pediatrics
- Human Growth and Development
- Biometry
Background:
- Diurnal variation in children's height is often overlooked in growth assessments.
- Daily fluctuations in stature can impact the accuracy of height measurements.
- This study investigated the extent of daily height measurement differences in children.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the degree of diurnal variation in height measurements among children.
- To determine the clinical significance of daily height changes in pediatric growth monitoring.
Main Methods:
- 478 children aged 3-15 years participated.
- Height was measured twice daily: once in the morning (09:00-10:00 h) and once in the afternoon (15:00-16:00 h).
Main Results:
- Height measurements showed a range of differences from +1.8 cm to -2.7 cm.
- A mean decrease in height of 0.47 +/- 0.05 cm was observed throughout the day.
Conclusions:
- Even minor height measurement differences are crucial when assessing short stature in children.
- Recording the time of day for height measurements is recommended for improved accuracy and reliability.
Background:
Diurnal variation of height is largely ignored in the assessment of growth in children. Diurnal decrease in stature may effect the reliability of height measurement. In this study, the degree of differences in daily height measurement were evaluated.
Methods:
A total of 478 children, aged 3-15 years (mean age 9.9 +/- 2.3 years) were enrolled in the study. The height of children were measured twice in a day. The first measurements were taken between 09:00 and 10:00 h and the second measurements between 15:00 and 16:00 h.
Results:
Children's height measurements differences were +1.8 to -2.7 cm, and a mean of 0.47 +/- 0.05 cm decrease was determined.
Conclusions:
Little differences of height measurement could be very important in evaluating the short child. When the result of height measurement is recorded, recording the time of day is offered.

Variation of Atmospheric Pressure
Assuming the air temperature is constant at a given altitude and that the ideal gas law of thermodynamics describes the atmosphere to a good approximation, one can find the variation of atmospheric pressure with height.
Let p(y) be the atmospheric pressure at...
