Thyroidectomy does not worsen globus pharyngeus symptoms. In patients with significant goitre (World Health Organization grade 2 or higher), thyroidectomy may actually improve these throat symptoms.

Area of Science:

  • Otolaryngology
  • Endocrinology
  • Surgical Research

Background:

  • Globus pharyngeus symptoms are commonly reported by patients after thyroidectomy.
  • Goitre is an identified organic cause of globus symptoms.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between goitre, thyroidectomy, and globus pharyngeus symptoms.
  • To assess the impact of thyroidectomy on globus symptoms using the Glasgow-Edinburgh Throat Scale.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective, questionnaire-based study involving 41 patients undergoing thyroidectomy.
  • Patients completed the Glasgow-Edinburgh Throat Scale pre-operatively, at three months, and 12 months post-operatively.

Main Results:

  • Thyroidectomy did not exacerbate globus symptoms at three or 12 months.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Significant improvement in questioned parameters was observed at three months (two parameters) and 12 months (six parameters) post-surgery (p < 0.023).
  • Conclusions:

    • Thyroidectomy is not associated with worsening of globus pharyngeus symptoms.
    • For patients with World Health Organization grade 2 or greater goitre, thyroidectomy may offer improvement in globus symptoms in the absence of other causes.
