Domestic electrocution is a rare cause of hearing loss. This case report details the first instance in the country of a person experiencing bilateral sensorineural deafness following an electrical injury.

Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Otolaryngology
  • Toxicology

Background:

  • Sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) can arise from various etiologies.
  • Electrocution, while uncommon, presents a potential risk factor for auditory system damage.

Observation:

  • A case of domestic electrocution is presented.
  • The patient developed bilateral sensorineural deafness subsequent to the electrical injury.

Findings:

  • This represents the first reported case of domestic electrocution leading to bilateral SNHL in this country.
  • The findings highlight a previously under-recognized complication of electrical injuries.

Implications:

  • This case underscores the importance of considering electrocution as a cause of SNHL in clinical practice.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Further research may be warranted to understand the pathophysiology and incidence of hearing loss after electrocution.
