Background:

  • Differentiated thyroid carcinomas can present as locally advanced or recurrent disease.
  • External beam radiation therapy (EBRT) is a treatment modality for various cancers.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of external beam radiation therapy (EBRT) in managing differentiated thyroid carcinomas.

Main Methods:

  • A cohort of 42 patients with locally advanced or recurrent differentiated thyroid carcinoma received high-dose EBRT.
  • Patient data included local-regional disease status (macroscopic vs. microscopic) and prior treatment.
  • Radiation doses and patient outcomes were analyzed.

Main Results:

  • The 5-year local-regional control rates were 88% overall and 89% for patients without distant metastases.
