A new high-power halogen light can significantly reduce orthodontic bracket bonding time. Recommended curing times are 6 seconds, or cautiously 3 seconds, for effective and durable bracket adhesion.

Area of Science:

  • Dental Materials Science
  • Orthodontic Technology

Background:

  • Orthodontic bracket bonding traditionally uses light-cured adhesives with lengthy curing times.
  • Conventional halogen lights are slow, while alternatives like laser and plasma lights are costly.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the minimum effective curing time for bonding orthodontic brackets using a new, cost-effective, high-power halogen light.

Main Methods:

  • Stainless steel brackets were bonded to bovine incisors using a high-power halogen light (2, 3, 6 seconds), a fast halogen light (40 seconds), and plasma light (4 seconds).
  • Shear bond strength was measured after 24-hour water storage to assess bond durability.

Main Results:

  • A 2-second curing time with the high-power halogen light resulted in significantly lower bond strength and survival.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Most bond failures occurred at the bracket base/adhesive interface, irrespective of the curing method.
  • Adhesive remnant index scores showed no significant differences among the tested groups.
  • Conclusions:

    • The high-power halogen light offers a cost-effective method to shorten bracket bonding curing times.
    • Recommended curing times for reliable stainless steel bracket bonding are 6 seconds, with 3 seconds being a viable option under careful consideration.
