Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Dermatopathology

Background:

  • Cutaneous angiosarcomas are rare mesenchymal tumors, comprising less than 1% of all soft tissue malignancies.
  • They typically manifest in elderly individuals on the face/scalp, post-lymphadema, or after radiation therapy.

Observation:

  • An elderly male patient presented with a long-standing scalp lesion.
  • The lesion had been present for 18 months.

Findings:

  • Histopathological examination of the scalp lesion confirmed angiosarcoma.
  • Immunohistochemical analysis revealed positivity for factor VIII related antigen, a marker for endothelial cell differentiation.

Implications:

  • This case reinforces the importance of considering angiosarcoma in the differential diagnosis of scalp lesions in the elderly.
