Summary

The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2 (MMPI-2) shows limited ability to measure conscientiousness (C). MMPI-2 items intended to mark conscientiousness also strongly correlate with neuroticism (N), hindering accurate measurement.

Area of Science:

  • Psychological Assessment
  • Personality Psychology
  • Psychometrics

Background:

  • The Big Five personality model is a widely accepted framework for understanding personality traits.
  • The NEO Personality Inventory (NEO-PI-R) is a popular measure of the Big Five factors.
  • Previous research suggests the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2 (MMPI-2) may not adequately capture the conscientiousness (C) dimension.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To re-evaluate the relationship between the MMPI-2 item pool and the conscientiousness (C) factor of the NEO-PI-R.
  • To investigate the extent to which MMPI-2 items can serve as valid markers for conscientiousness.
  • To explore potential confounding factors, such as neuroticism (N), in MMPI-2 conscientiousness measurement.

Main Methods:

Related Experiment Videos

  • Utilized MMPI-2 item pool data to identify potential markers for conscientiousness.
  • Cross-validation was performed using hold-out samples to assess the generalizability of MMPI-2 conscientiousness markers.
  • Statistical analyses were employed to examine correlations between MMPI-2 items and NEO-PI-R factors, including conscientiousness and neuroticism.
  • Main Results:

    • Collections of MMPI-2 items intended to measure conscientiousness (C) showed modest correlations (around .5) with the NEO-PI-R conscientiousness scale in cross-validation.
    • A significant finding was the strong association between MMPI-2 conscientiousness markers and the NEO-PI-R neuroticism (N) factor, often exceeding the correlation with conscientiousness.
    • Attempts to refine MMPI-2 conscientiousness markers by item selection and controlling for neuroticism yielded limited improvements in measurement accuracy.

    Conclusions:

    • The MMPI-2 item pool demonstrates limited utility for accurately measuring the conscientiousness dimension of the Big Five.
    • The substantial overlap between MMPI-2 conscientiousness markers and neuroticism suggests a fundamental challenge in differentiating these traits using the MMPI-2.
    • The observed difficulties may stem from inherent intercorrelations among NEO-PI-R scales, indicating that the issue extends beyond MMPI-2 item pool limitations.
