A Rorschach analysis: parallel disturbance in thought and in self/object representation.

J L Berg, A Packer, V J Nunno

    Journal of Personality Assessment
    |January 1, 1993

    Summary

This study found a significant link between severe thought process disturbances and imbalanced internal object relations in individuals with borderline personality disorder, schizophrenia, and narcissism. Findings support the connection between self/object differentiation and thought disturbances.

    Area of Science:

    • Psychology
    • Psychopathology
    • Psychoanalytic Theory

    Background:

    • Internal object relations are crucial for psychological functioning.
    • Thought process disturbances are common in severe mental health conditions.
    • Understanding the link between cognition and object relations is key to psychopathology research.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the relationship between thought process disturbance and the structure of internal object relations.
    • To examine Rorschach variables reflecting developmental levels of object relations.
    • To test the hypothesis linking self/object differentiation to thought process disturbance.

    Main Methods:

    • Correlated Rorschach Comprehensive System (CS) Special Scorings and content variables.

    Related Experiment Videos

  • Utilized Urist's Mutuality of Autonomy Scale (MOA) for object relations assessment.
  • Analyzed Rorschach protocols from 35 borderline, 15 schizophrenic, and 19 narcissistic patients.
  • Main Results:

    • Highly significant correlations (p < .0001) were found between severe thought process disturbance and severe imbalance in internalized object representations.
    • The study supported the hypothesis that disturbed self/object differentiation is significantly related to thought process disturbance.
    • Specific Rorschach scores indicated a strong association between cognitive disorganization and relational pathology.

    Conclusions:

    • Empirical evidence supports theoretical constructs of ego function deficit and self/object disturbance.
    • Findings have implications for understanding the psychopathology of thought disorders and personality disturbances.
    • The Rorschach CS provides a valid tool for assessing these complex psychological constructs.
