Area of Science:

  • Radiology
  • Gastroenterology
  • Abdominal Imaging

Background:

  • Internal hernia is a rare cause of intestinal obstruction.
  • Accurate diagnosis is crucial for timely surgical intervention.

Observation:

  • This case series describes sonographic findings in four patients with internal hernia causing intestinal obstruction.
  • Sonography utilized broadband convex and linear array transducers.

Findings:

  • All patients presented with clinical features of intestinal obstruction.
  • Sonographic hallmarks included a transition zone between dilated and non-dilated bowel.
  • Three patients exhibited a characteristic cluster of compressed, aperistaltic small bowel loops within a sac, indicative of afferent loop obstruction.
  • One patient showed dilated bowel loops within a fluid-outlined sac, suggesting efferent loop obstruction.

Implications:

  • Sonography can reliably depict the characteristic imaging features of internal hernia.
  • These findings aid in the prompt diagnosis and management of this uncommon cause of bowel obstruction.
