Purpose of the Study:

  • To quantify the effect of nuclear lens opacity on spatial contrast sensitivity.
  • To correlate lens density with contrast sensitivity and visual acuity.

Main Methods:

  • Measured spatial contrast sensitivity using conventional (monitor) and interferometric methods in 30 subjects (18 with nuclear cataracts, 12 controls).
  • Assessed lens nuclear opacity using Zeiss Scheimpflug slit-lamp video images.
  • Correlated lens density with contrast sensitivity and visual acuity (log MAR).

Conclusions:

  • Pure nuclear cataracts significantly impair spatial contrast sensitivity, particularly at intermediate and high spatial frequencies.
  • Increased lens nuclear opacity is directly associated with reduced contrast sensitivity and visual acuity.
