Immunity, major depression, and panic disorder comorbidity.

Summary

Major depression with comorbid panic disorder shows distinct immune differences. Patients with panic disorder had higher T cell numbers and function, suggesting panic disorder impacts immune markers in depression.

Background:

Recent research suggests clinical and biological differences in major depression with comorbid panic disorder.
Altered immune measures have been reported in specific subgroups of depressive patients.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate if T lymphocyte number and function abnormalities are associated with panic disorder comorbidity in major depressive episode (MDE).

Main Methods:

Studied 51 pairs of MDE subjects and gender/age-matched healthy controls.
Assessed T lymphocyte numbers and function, including phytohemagglutinin (PHA) and concanavalin A (ConA) responses.

Main Results:

MDE subjects with panic disorder (PD) exhibited significantly greater T cell numbers compared to depressive patients without PD (p < 0.05).

These subjects also showed increased PHA and ConA mitogen responses compared to both depressive patients without PD and healthy controls (p < 0.05, p < 0.02).

Conclusions:

Panic disorder comorbidity significantly influences immunologic parameters in major depression.
Panic disorder should be carefully assessed in psychoimmunological studies of psychiatric patients with affective disorders.
