Area of Science:

  • Agricultural Safety
  • Pediatric Injury Prevention
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Farms present unique hazards to children.
  • Childhood farm injuries pose a significant public health concern.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the incidence and nature of accidental injuries and deaths in children on farms.
  • To identify key risk factors and accident types in pediatric farm environments.

Main Methods:

  • A prospective county-based study of children presenting to accident and emergency departments.
  • A nationwide review of fatal childhood farm accidents over a four-year period.
  • Inclusion of children under 16 sustaining farm-related injuries or fatalities.

Main Results:

  • 65 injuries were recorded, with 18 fractures and 9 hospital admissions.
  • Tractors and machinery (13 incidents) and falls (24 incidents) were major causes of injury.
  • 33 deaths were notified, with tractors/machinery and falling objects being significant contributors.

Conclusions:

  • Despite improvements, farms continue to be hazardous environments for children.
  • Enhanced enforcement of safety legislation and targeted safety education are crucial for reducing farm accident rates.
  • Current statutory notification schemes may not capture all farm-related incidents.
