Summary

Shorter or longer sleep durations within individuals significantly impact dream recall frequency. However, differences in average sleep duration between people did not correlate with dream recall. Sleep inertia may explain these findings.

Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Sleep Science
  • Cognitive Psychology

Background:

  • Conflicting prior research exists on habitual sleep duration and dream recall.
  • Experimental studies indicate sleep duration affects dream recall.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the simultaneous effects of intra-individual and inter-individual sleep duration on dream recall.
  • To clarify the relationship between sleep patterns and dream recall frequency.

Main Methods:

  • Analysis of 28-111 days of diary data from 196 participants.
  • Simultaneous examination of within-person (intra-individual) and between-person (inter-individual) sleep duration variations.
  • Correlation analysis between sleep duration fluctuations and dream recall frequency.

Main Results:

  • Intra-individual fluctuations in sleep duration were significantly associated with dream recall.
  • Inter-individual differences in average sleep duration were not linked to dream recall frequency.
  • Sleep inertia is proposed as a potential explanatory factor.

Conclusions:

  • Individual sleep variability, not average sleep duration, influences dream recall.
  • Further research into sleep inertia's role in dream recall is warranted.
