Self-Presentation01:25

Self-Presentation

312
Self-presentation is a fundamental aspect of social interaction, shaping both how others perceive individuals and how they view themselves. This dynamic process influences behaviors in various social settings, often leading people to adjust their appearance, speech, and demeanor to align with their desired identity. While self-presentation can be deliberate or unconscious, it plays a critical role in interpersonal relationships and self-perception.Forms of Self-PresentationSelf-presentation can...

Strategies of Self-Presentation I: Strategic Self-Presentation

210
Strategic self-presentation refers to individuals' intentional efforts to influence how others perceive them. This process is employed in various social and professional settings, such as job interviews, dating, politics, and legal contexts, where individuals seek to shape impressions to gain social or material advantages. While people generally present themselves in ways that align with their authentic characteristics, external factors, such as cognitive load, can hinder their ability to...

Processes of Self-Presentation

220
Effective self-presentation is a central component of social interaction and identity construction. It relies on the dynamic processes of defining the situation and engaging in self-disclosure. These mechanisms help individuals navigate social context expectations and manage how others perceive them, fostering mutual understanding and relationship development.Defining the SituationSocial situations are shaped by collectively understood frames—a set of widely understood rules or...

Strategies of Self-Presentation II: Self-Verification

186
Self-verification is a fundamental psychological drive wherein individuals seek affirmation of their self-concept from others, striving for consistency between their internal self-view and external perceptions. This drive operates even when the self-concept is negative, influencing interpersonal behavior and feedback preferences in complex and often counterintuitive ways. Unlike the self-enhancement motive, which seeks positive evaluations, self-verification prioritizes coherence and...

Self-Presentation: Self-Monitoring and Self-Handicapping

44.6K
People can go to great lengths to protect their self-image and present themselves in ways that they want others to see them. Sociologist Erving Goffman presented the idea that a person is like an actor on a stage. Calling his theory dramaturgy, Goffman believed that we use “impression management” to present ourselves to others as we hope to be perceived. Each situation is a new scene, and individuals perform different roles depending on who is present (Goffman, 1959). Think about...

Variables Affecting Phosphorescence and Fluorescence01:26

Variables Affecting Phosphorescence and Fluorescence

1.5K
Fluorescence and phosphorescence are essential phenomena in fields like analytical chemistry, biological imaging, and materials science, where they detect molecular properties and visualize cellular structures. Understanding the variables that influence these luminescent behaviors is crucial for maximizing accuracy and efficiency in their applications. These variables can broadly be grouped into chemical structure, solvent properties, and external conditions, each playing a distinct role in...

Summary

Pulmonary blastoma, a rare lung cancer, presents with varied features and affects younger patients more than non-small cell lung carcinoma. Early detection and treatment are key for improving outcomes in this aggressive tumor.

Area of Science:

  • Thoracic oncology
  • Rare tumors
  • Surgical pathology

Background:

  • Pulmonary blastoma is a rare primary lung neoplasm with a typically poor prognosis.
  • It often affects younger individuals compared to non-small cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC).
  • Classical presentation includes large, symptomatic tumors with lymph node metastasis.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To report the clinical experience with seven patients diagnosed with pulmonary blastoma.
  • To describe the varying clinical features and outcomes of pulmonary blastoma.
  • To contribute to understanding this rare pulmonary neoplasm.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of seven pulmonary blastoma cases operated between 1993 and 2004.
  • Comparison with 889 lung resections for primary NSCLC during the same period.
  • Review of demographic, clinical, histopathological, and radiological data.

Main Results:

  • Pulmonary blastomas exhibited a bimodal age distribution (patients <49 and >66 years).
  • All seven patients were symptomatic with variable tumor sizes, predominantly in lower lobes (T2N0).
  • All underwent surgical resection; no adjuvant chemotherapy or radiotherapy was administered. Three patients died from unrelated causes; one survivor had over 9 years of follow-up.

Conclusions:

  • Pulmonary blastomas are rare but present with diverse clinical characteristics.
  • Early detection and prompt treatment may enhance patient prognosis.
  • Larger studies are necessary to further elucidate pulmonary blastoma characteristics and optimize management strategies.
