Interstitial cystitis (IC) may involve viral co-infections. This study found BK polyomavirus (BKV) and high-risk HPV-66 DNA in an IC patient, suggesting a multi-factorial origin for this bladder condition.

Area of Science:

  • Urology
  • Virology
  • Oncology

Background:

  • Interstitial cystitis (IC) is a chronic bladder condition with unknown causes, characterized by severe symptoms.
  • It predominantly affects women around age 40, with a significant portion diagnosed before 30.

Observation:

  • A case study examined a 42-year-old woman diagnosed with interstitial cystitis.
  • Biopsy samples were analyzed for viral and bacterial DNA using PCR.

Findings:

  • Both biopsy samples tested positive for BK polyomavirus (BKV) DNA and human papillomavirus (HPV) DNA.
  • HPV genotyping identified HPV-66, a type linked to increased cancer risk.

Implications:

  • The presence of a viral co-infection, specifically BKV and high-risk HPV, supports the theory of a multi-factorial etiology for interstitial cystitis.

Related Experiment Videos

  • This finding may open new avenues for understanding and potentially treating IC.
