Summary

Researchers investigated reducing the preratio pause in rats using timeout punishment. Punishment effectively reduced long pauses, increasing reinforcement rates, suggesting self-maintenance is possible.

Background:

The preratio pause is a common behavior in fixed-ratio schedules.
This pause is not required and decreases reinforcement rates.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate methods for reducing the preratio pause.
To examine the effects of timeout punishment on pausing behavior.

Main Methods:

Five rats were trained on fixed-ratio schedules.
Timeout punishment was applied to pauses exceeding a specific duration.
Punishment withdrawal involved abrupt removal or fading procedures.

Main Results:

Most long pauses were eliminated after 30 punishment sessions.
Reduced pausing led to decreased positive skew in pause duration distribution.
