Area of Science:

  • Pediatric Surgery
  • Trauma Surgery
  • Diagnostic Imaging

Background:

  • Traumatic diaphragmatic hernia is an uncommon pediatric injury.
  • Left-sided herniations constitute the vast majority (90%) of cases.
  • Diagnosis is frequently delayed due to rarity and co-existing injuries.

Observation:

  • Two pediatric cases of traumatic diaphragmatic rupture are presented.
  • Clinical history of trauma was a key element in diagnosis.
  • Plain radiography and barium studies were utilized for diagnosis.

Findings:

  • Plain X-rays and barium studies were diagnostic in both reported cases.
  • Imaging modalities like CT and ultrasound can aid in complex cases.
  • Early diagnosis is crucial for effective management of diaphragmatic injuries.

Implications:

  • Highlights the importance of considering diaphragmatic injury in pediatric trauma.
  • Emphasizes the diagnostic utility of conventional radiography and barium studies.
  • Suggests that prompt recognition and imaging can prevent diagnostic delays in pediatric traumatic diaphragmatic hernia.
