Summary

Post-kala-azar dermal leishmaniasis (PKDL) presents with distinct histopathological features. Leishmania donovani bodies (LDBs) are infrequently found in PKDL lesions, especially in hypopigmented macules.

Background:

  • Post-kala-azar dermal leishmaniasis (PKDL) is a sequel to visceral leishmaniasis.
  • Caused by the same pathogen, Leishmania donovani.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate epidermal and dermal changes in PKDL.
  • To determine the presence of Leishmania donovani bodies (LDBs) in PKDL lesions.

Main Methods:

  • Biopsy specimens from 25 clinically diagnosed PKDL patients were analyzed.
  • Histopathological examination focused on epidermal/dermal changes and LDB detection.

Main Results:

  • Hypopigmented macules showed perivascular infiltrate; no LDBs detected.
  • Nodular/plaque lesions exhibited diffuse infiltrate beneath atrophic epidermis with follicular plugging.
