Summary

Occupational skin conditions are prevalent among paddy field workers, with itching, melasma, and hand/foot issues like nail dystrophy and hyperkeratosis being common. Bacterial and fungal infections also contribute to these work-related dermatoses.

Background:

  • Paddy farming is a primary occupation in coastal South India.
  • Dermatological conditions affecting paddy field workers are understudied.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the prevalence and types of skin conditions (dermatoses) affecting exposed areas (face, hands, feet) in paddy field workers.
  • To identify common dermatological issues in this occupational group.

Main Methods:

  • Clinical examination and interviews were conducted with 341 paddy field workers.
  • Bacterial and fungal scrapings were collected from a subset of participants for laboratory analysis.

Main Results:

  • Work-related itching affected 73% of workers.
