Summary

A rare case of bison metacarpal fracture involved a distal bone fragment becoming a sequestrum. This sequestrum surprisingly supported the bone until new bone healed the fracture.

Area of Science:

  • Veterinary Orthopedics
  • Large Animal Surgery

Background:

  • Open fractures in large animals present complex treatment challenges.
  • Metacarpal fractures in American bison are uncommon, especially those involving significant bone sequestration.

Observation:

  • A 2-year-old American bison presented with an open fracture of metacarpal bones 3 and 4.
  • Radiographs indicated osteolysis and extensive callus formation, with the distal fragment appearing to sequester.
  • The sequestrum acted as a temporary buttress, preventing collapse.

Findings:

  • Surgical debridement and external coaptation (full-limb cast) were employed.
  • The cast was changed regularly to manage the sequestrum and promote healing.
  • Histological examination confirmed the distal fragment as a sequestrum.

Related Experiment Videos

Implications:

  • This case highlights the potential for long bone sequestration following fracture in large animals.
  • The unique buttressing role of the sequestrum offers insights into fracture healing mechanisms.
  • Successful management underscores the importance of adaptive treatment strategies in veterinary orthopedics.
