Takotsubo cardiomyopathy, a reversible heart failure, presents with a unique ventricular shape and high norepinephrine levels. This condition generally has a good prognosis and does not recur.

Area of Science:

  • Cardiology
  • Cardiovascular Medicine
  • Heart Failure Research

Background:

  • Recognized rapidly reversible heart failure of unknown origin.
  • Characterized by takotsubo-shaped, dyskinetic left ventricle on left ventriculography.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the detailed clinical features of takotsubo cardiomyopathy.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective enrollment of 13 elderly patients (11 women, 2 men; mean age 75.3 years).
  • Patients had normal coronary arteries and takotsubo-like left ventricular dysfunction.

Main Results:

  • Normal coronary arteries confirmed by angiography; takotsubo-shaped ventricle on left ventriculography (apical akinesis, basal hyperkinesis).
  • Significantly elevated plasma norepinephrine levels on admission (0.98 microg/l).

Related Experiment Videos

  • Left ventricular function normalized in 12 patients within a mean of 16.9 hospital days; no recurrence during follow-up.
  • Conclusions:

    • Takotsubo cardiomyopathy is a distinct type of acute heart failure with a generally good prognosis.
    • Potential causes include catecholamine overload, adrenoceptor hypersensitivity, and stress-induced catecholamine dynamic changes.
    • The condition is characterized by rapid reversibility and low recurrence rates.
