Summary

Monofilament sutures (Biosyn) did not reduce problems compared to multifilament sutures (Dexon II) after vaginal delivery. More women using monofilament sutures reported issues with the sutured area in this study.

Area of Science:

  • Obstetrics and Gynecology
  • Surgical Materials Science

Background:

  • Suturing is common after vaginal delivery for lacerations and episiotomies.
  • Suture material choice may impact patient outcomes and comfort.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare a new monofilament suture (Biosyn) with a standard multifilament suture (Dexon II) for postpartum perineal repair.
  • To assess differences in patient-reported problems, discomfort, and pain.

Main Methods:

  • A randomized study involving 1139 women undergoing perineal suturing by midwives.
  • Comparison of monofilament glycomer 631 (Biosyn) versus multifilament polyglycolic acid (Dexon II) sutures.
  • Outcomes assessed via inspection and Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) for pain and discomfort at 8-12 weeks postpartum.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • A higher incidence of problems with the sutured area was reported by women in the monofilament (Biosyn) group.
  • No significant difference in pain or discomfort levels was explicitly stated as lower for monofilament, but overall problems were higher.

Conclusions:

  • The monofilament suture (Biosyn) did not demonstrate superiority over the multifilament suture (Dexon II) in reducing postpartum suturing complications.
  • Further research may be needed to evaluate long-term outcomes and patient satisfaction with different suture materials in obstetrics.
