Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Oncology
  • Immunology

Background:

  • Primary central nervous system (CNS) lymphomas are rare, with most cases being secondary to systemic disease.
  • Immunoglobulin A (IgA) lambda-restricted paraprotein production is an uncommon finding in CNS malignancies.

Observation:

  • A unique case of a solitary, primary CNS tumor producing IgA (lambda) is presented.
  • Clinical presentation and neuroimaging findings suggestive of a CNS malignancy were observed.

Findings:

  • Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and serum immunoglobulin analysis revealed localized paraprotein production within the CNS.
  • This diagnostic approach enabled early identification of the specific immunoglobulin abnormality.

Implications:

Related Experiment Videos

  • This case highlights the utility of CSF and serum immunoglobulin analysis for early diagnosis of rare CNS tumors.
  • Successful therapy was achieved without the need for invasive brain biopsy, demonstrating a less invasive diagnostic pathway.
