Ectopic prostatic tissue in the bladder is rare, with only 32 reported cases. Recognizing this benign condition is crucial for urologists and pathologists to avoid misdiagnosis of malignancy.

Area of Science:

  • Urology
  • Pathology
  • Histology

Background:

  • Ectopic prostatic tissue in the bladder is an uncommon finding, typically presenting as midline vestigial remnants.
  • Literature review reveals only 32 previously reported cases in English.

Observation:

  • Three new cases of ectopic prostatic tissue are presented, located in the retrotrigonal area and near the left ureteral orifice.
  • Patients presented with hematuria (gross or microscopic) and polypoid lesions.
  • Histopathologic and immunohistochemical analyses confirmed the prostatic origin of the tissue.

Findings:

  • Ectopic prostatic tissue can mimic urinary system malignancies during endoscopic evaluation.
  • All reported cases, including the three presented, demonstrated a benign nature.

Related Experiment Videos

  • No recurrences were observed in the presented cases.
  • Implications:

    • Urologists and pathologists must be aware of ectopic prostatic tissue to ensure accurate diagnosis.
    • Recognition of this benign entity prevents unnecessary aggressive treatment for suspected cancers.
    • Further awareness can improve patient management and reduce diagnostic uncertainty.
