Summary

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) patients exhibit abnormal glucagon levels, potentially explaining glucose intolerance and altered insulin responses. This study investigated glucagon and insulin changes after soy or casein meals in ALS.

Background:

  • Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is associated with metabolic dysregulation, including glucose intolerance and abnormal plasma amino acid levels.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the role of glucagon abnormalities in glucose intolerance and insulin reactions in ALS.
  • To compare the effects of different protein sources (soy vs. casein) on glucagon, insulin, and glucose levels in ALS patients.

Main Methods:

  • Eleven ALS patients received two test meals (soy or casein) on separate occasions.
  • Fasting and postprandial blood samples were collected to measure glucagon, insulin, and glucose levels.
