Area of Science:

  • Dentistry
  • Aesthetic Dentistry
  • Dental Materials

Background:

  • Discolored anterior teeth can negatively impact patient aesthetics and self-confidence.
  • Superficial enamel stains, such as those from fluorosis, present a challenge in cosmetic dentistry.
  • Combination treatments are increasingly explored for comprehensive dental esthetic improvements.

Observation:

  • A patient presented with discolored anterior teeth, exhibiting superficial fluorosis stains.
  • The initial treatment involved enamel microabrasion to address the superficial staining.
  • Following microabrasion, the teeth appeared more yellow, necessitating further shade lightening.

Findings:

  • A combination technique involving enamel microabrasion followed by a home bleaching regimen was employed.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Enamel microabrasion successfully removed superficial fluorosis stains.
  • The subsequent home bleaching effectively lightened the overall tooth shade, addressing post-microabrasion yellowing.
  • Implications:

    • Combination bleaching techniques offer a viable solution for managing complex tooth discolorations.
    • This approach can enhance patient satisfaction by improving dental aesthetics.
    • Further research into optimizing combination protocols for various types of tooth discoloration is warranted.
