- Integrated Optics
Background:
- Optical directional couplers are essential components in integrated optical circuits.
- Conventional designs often require polarization diversity schemes, increasing complexity and footprint.
- Slot waveguides offer unique light confinement properties for novel device designs.
Purpose of the Study:
- To propose and analyze a polarization-independent optical directional coupler.
- To demonstrate the feasibility of achieving equal coupling lengths for quasi-TE and quasi-TM modes.
- To explore the tolerance of the proposed coupler to variations in operating wavelength and structural parameters.
Main Methods:
- Rigorous full-vectorial analysis using a finite-element scheme.
- Design and simulation of a slot waveguide-based optical directional coupler.
- Parametric studies to optimize materials and structural dimensions.
Main Results:
- A polarization-independent optical directional coupler design was successfully proposed and analyzed.
- Equal coupling lengths for quasi-TE and quasi-TM modes were achieved by optimizing materials and structural parameters.
- The coupler demonstrated acceptable tolerances to operating wavelength and structural variations.
Conclusions:
- The proposed slot waveguide optical directional coupler is polarization-independent.
- This device enables highly integrated optical circuits without the need for polarization diversity.
- The findings contribute to advancements in compact and efficient photonic integrated circuits.

Independent and Dependent Sources
Independent voltage or current sources supply a fixed amount of voltage or current, respectively, which is unaffected by other elements within the circuit. These are represented using specific symbols. Independent voltage sources are symbolized with polarities (+ and -), indicating the direction of the...
