Progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) involves oxidative stress. In aging PSP patients, the antioxidant system shows increased Cu/Zn-superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx), but HNE-conjugation may impair function.

- Cu/Zn-SOD and GPx levels positively correlated with age in the PSP group.
- Two-thirds of total GPx in PSP patients was HNE-conjugated, also showing a positive correlation with age.
Conclusions:
- The endogenous antioxidant system in PSP patients appears activated with aging.
- However, HNE-conjugation of GPx may compromise its effective function in aging PSP patients.
- These findings suggest a potential mechanism for oxidative stress in PSP progression.
