Summary

This study validated the German prostate-specific module (PSM) for assessing quality of life (QoL) in prostate cancer patients. The PSM is a reliable and valid tool for evaluating QoL impacts of different prostate cancer treatments.

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Psychometrics
  • Health Services Research

Background:

  • Prostate cancer patients face treatment choices (radical prostatectomy vs. radiotherapy) impacting quality of life (QoL).
  • Assessing QoL requires reliable instruments for general and prostate-specific symptoms.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To psychometrically evaluate and validate the German prostate-specific module (PSM).
  • To assess the reliability and validity of the PSM for QoL assessment in prostate cancer patients.

Main Methods:

  • Empirical meta-analysis of five historical cohort studies.
  • Psychometric evaluation including principal component analysis.
  • Validation using 950 prostate cancer patients' QoL data (EORTC QLQ-C30 and PSM).

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Principal component analysis identified scales: urinary problems, incontinence, erectile dysfunction, sexual problems, partner issues, pain, heat, nutrition, and psychic strain.
  • The PSM demonstrated good reliability and concurrent validity.
  • Very good construct validity was shown, with the module discriminating between treatment regimes, tumor stages, and age.

Conclusions:

  • The German PSM is a reliable, valid, and applicable tool for assessing QoL in prostate cancer patients.
  • The validated PSM can differentiate QoL impacts across various patient and treatment characteristics.
