Summary

Patients with diffuse parenchymal lung disease (DPLD) awaiting lung transplants commonly experience reduced bone mineral density (BMD). Lower BMI and Hispanic ethnicity were linked to osteoporosis risk in this DPLD patient group.

Background:

  • Diffuse parenchymal lung disease (DPLD) impacts skeletal health, with limited research on bone status in patients awaiting lung transplantation.
  • Corticosteroid use and reduced pulmonary function/exercise capacity are potential contributors to bone loss in DPLD.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the prevalence of osteoporosis and osteopenia in patients with DPLD referred for lung transplantation.
  • To identify clinical factors associated with reduced bone mineral density (BMD) in this patient population.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective cohort study of 86 DPLD patients evaluated for lung transplantation.
  • Bone mineral density (BMD) measured using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) at lumbar spine, femoral neck, total hip, and radius.
