Summary

Allergy to paracetamol is rare but not uncommon, with previous allergies to paracetamol or aspirin increasing risk. Most allergic reactions resolved favorably, but contraindication is advised for high-risk patients.

Area of Science:

  • Pharmacovigilance
  • Clinical Allergy
  • Drug Safety

Context:

  • Paracetamol (acetaminophen) is a widely used analgesic and antipyretic.
  • Allergic reactions to paracetamol are reported but often considered moderate.
  • Understanding risk factors and clinical presentation is crucial for patient safety.

Purpose:

  • To retrospectively analyze cases of allergic reactions to paracetamol.
  • To identify potential risk factors and clinical manifestations of paracetamol allergy.
  • To evaluate the outcomes and management of paracetamol-induced hypersensitivity.

Summary:

  • A study reviewed 119 cases of paracetamol allergy reported between 1990-2000.
  • Key findings include a history of allergy/atopy, co-administration with other drugs, and varied dermatological reactions (urticaria, macular/pustular eruptions, fixed drug eruption).

Related Experiment Videos

  • Serious reactions like Lyell syndrome and anaphylactic shock occurred, but all cases resolved favorably with definitive contraindication for high-imputability patients.
  • Impact:

    • Highlights that paracetamol allergy, while rare, is a significant concern.
    • Identifies personal history of paracetamol or aspirin allergy as key risk factors.
    • Emphasizes the importance of pharmacovigilance in detecting and managing adverse drug reactions.
