Summary

Elderly patients with bipolar disorder and a history of suicide attempts were studied. Treatment with mood stabilizers and antidepressants may reduce suicide risk in this population.

Background:

  • Bipolar disorder significantly increases suicide risk, especially in the elderly.
  • Elderly individuals exhibit the highest suicide rates across all age groups.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between psychotropic drug exposure and suicide attempts in elderly patients with bipolar affective disorder (BAD).

Main Methods:

  • A preliminary, retrospective, matched, case-controlled study over 10 years.
  • Inclusion of patients diagnosed with BAD (ICD-10).
  • Index group: patients attempting suicide prior to admission; Control group: matched patients without recent suicide attempts.

Main Results:

  • The index group (suicide attempters) had a significantly higher history of suicide attempts (7/16) compared to the control group (2/16).
  • Elderly BAD patients treated with both mood stabilizers and antidepressants showed a significantly lower risk of recent suicide attempts (p=0.047).

Conclusions:

  • Elderly patients with bipolar affective disorder treated with mood stabilizers and antidepressants may have a reduced risk of suicide attempts.
  • The small sample size and retrospective nature necessitate further investigation.
  • Prospective randomized trials are recommended to validate these findings.
