Summary

Dysbaric osteonecrosis (DON) is linked to high levels of plasminogen activator inhibitor (PAI)-1 and increased diving depth. These findings suggest anticoagulants may help prevent DON in divers.

Background:

  • Dysbaric osteonecrosis (DON) is a serious complication of diving and other high-pressure exposures.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify independent risk factors associated with the development of dysbaric osteonecrosis (DON) in divers.
  • To investigate the role of coagulation markers and diving parameters in DON occurrence.
  • To provide evidence for potential preventative strategies against DON.

  • Skeletal radiography was used to diagnose DON in 56 male divers.
  • A questionnaire collected data on diving experience and maximum depth.
