Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Surgical Oncology
  • Medical Oncology

Context:

  • Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST) are rare mesenchymal neoplasms.
  • GISTs most frequently occur in the stomach and small intestine.
  • Complete surgical resection is the current standard of care for localized GIST.

Purpose:

  • To review the treatment outcomes of GIST patients.
  • To evaluate the efficacy of complete negative margin resections in GIST management.
  • To assess the role of imatinib in advanced GIST cases.

Summary:

  • This series includes 23 patients diagnosed with GIST between 1994 and 2004.
  • All patients underwent complete negative margin resections.
  • Three patients had laparoscopic surgical removal.
