Area of Science:

  • Trauma Care
  • Healthcare Management
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Over 30,000 polytraumatized patients are treated annually in German trauma centers.
  • The precise number and distribution of hospitals equipped for severe trauma care were previously unknown.
  • Geographic and infrastructure factors influencing trauma patient management required analysis.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the number of hospitals capable of managing polytraumatized patients in Germany.
  • To analyze the impact of geographic and infrastructure conditions on severe injury patient management.
  • To identify regional variations in trauma care resources across German Federal States.

Main Methods:

  • Conducted a nationwide survey of trauma management hospitals, focusing on structural and personnel requirements.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Compared hospital data with information from the Federal Statistical Office.
  • Utilized specialized software for the first-time geographic visualization of all trauma hospitals.
  • Main Results:

    • Germany possesses 108 level I, 209 level II, and 431 level III and IV trauma centers.
    • Significant regional differences in the geographic concentration of trauma care facilities were observed.
    • A correlation exists between higher trauma mortality rates and lower hospital concentration with less developed infrastructure.

    Conclusions:

    • The overall number of trauma centers in Germany appears adequate for treating severely injured patients.
    • Substantial disparities in hospital distribution, geographic accessibility, and infrastructure exist among German Federal States.
    • Establishing regional trauma networks is essential for optimizing trauma care management nationwide.
