Purpose of the Study:

  • An analytical, cross-sectional study was conducted at Aga Khan University outpatient clinics.
  • Two hundred adult patients (18+ years) with stage 1 and 2 hypertension, on antihypertensive medication for at least 6 months, were included.
  • Data collected included demographics, duration of hypertension, compliance status, reasons for noncompliance, and blood pressure measurements.

Main Results:

  • Fifty-seven percent of patients were compliant with their antihypertensive therapy.
  • Forgetfulness was the most common reason for noncompliance (56.8%), followed by deliberately missed doses (12.7%) and side effects (11.6%).
  • Non-compliant patients exhibited significantly higher mean systolic (133 mmHg vs 126 mmHg) and diastolic (81.9 mmHg vs 76 mmHg) blood pressure compared to compliant patients.

Conclusions:

  • Compliance to antihypertensive therapy is generally good in a tertiary care setting.
  • Forgetfulness is a significant barrier to adherence, impacting blood pressure control.
  • Improved patient counseling and strategies to address forgetfulness are recommended to enhance therapeutic outcomes.
