Summary

Semi-open hemorrhoidectomy significantly speeds up wound healing and reduces pain compared to open procedures. Patients experienced fewer complications and faster recovery of normal bowel function with the semi-open approach.

Area of Science:

  • Colorectal Surgery
  • Surgical Outcomes Research

Background:

  • Hemorrhoidal disease affects a significant portion of the population.
  • Surgical interventions like hemorrhoidectomy are common treatments.
  • Optimizing surgical techniques is crucial for improving patient recovery and reducing complications.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare healing times between semi-open and open hemorrhoidectomy.
  • To analyze and compare the incidence of post-operative complications.
  • To evaluate analgesic use and time to reestablish normal bowel habits.

Main Methods:

  • Randomized trial involving 300 patients with hemorrhoidal disease.
  • Allocation to either semi-open (Group A) or open (Group B) hemorrhoidectomy.
  • Detailed follow-up including wound observation, complication recording, analgesic use, and bowel habit assessment for at least three months.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Average healing time was significantly shorter in the semi-open group (12.38 days) versus the open group (25.22 days).
  • Higher incidence of post-operative complications like granuloma and pruritus in the open group.
  • Patients in the semi-open group required significantly less analgesics and reestablished normal bowel habits earlier.

Conclusions:

  • Semi-open hemorrhoidectomy offers a statistically significant advantage in terms of faster healing and reduced post-operative complications.
  • The semi-open technique leads to improved patient outcomes, including decreased pain and quicker return to normal bowel function.
  • This study supports the semi-open approach as a potentially superior method for hemorrhoidectomy.
