Background:

The spleen's role in liver fibrosis in schistosomiasis remains unclear.
Hepatosplenic schistosomiasis mansoni affects numerous patients globally.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the impact of splenectomy on serum fibrosis markers (type IV collagen and TIMP-1) in schistosomiasis patients.

Main Methods:

Assessed serum levels of type IV collagen and TIMP-1 in 24 patients pre-splenectomy and at 2 and 60 days post-operation.
Analyzed changes in marker levels following spleen removal.

Main Results:

Splenectomy led to a significant decrease in type IV collagen and TIMP-1 serum levels compared to preoperative values.
These reductions were sustained up to 60 days post-surgery.
