Summary

Ureteroappendiculoplasty using the appendix is a simple technique for ureteral substitution. This procedure successfully restored kidney function in all six patients studied.

Context:

Ureteral defects pose significant reconstructive challenges.
Traditional methods for ureteral substitution can be complex and associated with complications.

Purpose:

To evaluate the efficacy of ureteroappendiculoplasty as a ureteral substitution technique.
To determine the feasibility and outcomes of using the appendix for ureteral repair.

Summary:

Six patients (4 female, 2 male; mean age 37) with right ureteral lesions underwent appendiculoureteroplasty between 1997 and 2002.
The appendix was used for substitution due to intraoperative difficulties with other procedures, with mean ureteral loss of 12 cm.
The appendix was anastomosed between ureteral ends (2 cases) or ureter and bladder (4 cases).

All patients demonstrated recovery of kidney function after a mean follow-up of 3 years.
Autotransplantation of the appendix offers a viable and effective solution for ureteral continuity restoration.
This technique provides good functional outcomes in managing ureteral defects.
