Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Surgical Gastroenterology
  • Hepatobiliary Surgery

Context:

  • Gallstone ileus is a rare but serious complication of cholelithiasis (gallstones).
  • It presents as a form of mechanical intestinal obstruction.
  • Understanding its frequency and risk factors is crucial for patient management.

Purpose:

  • To determine the incidence of gallstone ileus as a complication of cholelithiasis.
  • To identify its prevalence as a cause of intestinal obstruction.
  • To analyze factors influencing morbidity and mortality in affected patients.

Summary:

  • A retrospective review identified 7 cases of gallstone ileus among 1054 cholelithiasis and 189 intestinal obstruction surgeries.
  • The frequency was 0.66% for cholelithiasis and 3.70% for intestinal obstruction, rising to 12% in patients over 60.
  • Key risk factors for adverse outcomes included advanced age, comorbidities, and delayed medical attention.

Impact:

  • This study quantifies the incidence of gallstone ileus in a surgical cohort.
  • It highlights specific patient demographics and clinical factors associated with increased morbidity and mortality.
  • Findings can inform clinical practice for earlier diagnosis and intervention in high-risk individuals.
